Using Technology to Enhance Independent Living: Breaking Barriers with Innovation

This discussion will spotlight how assistive technology and remote supports—from voice-activated home systems and mobility aids to augmentative communication devices, wearable health monitors, and AI-powered tools—are transforming the lives of people with disabilities across New Jersey. Presenters from disability organizations will share how these innovations are helping caregivers and providers improve the delivery of services while also helping individuals with disabilities live more independently.
The conversation will also examine how state-level policies can support wider access to these technologies and supports—through Medicaid waivers, broadband expansion, workforce training, procurement reforms, and inclusive design standards. Lawmakers will hear about both success stories and persistent barriers, with the goal of identifying actionable steps to foster innovation, reduce disparities, and ensure all residents benefit from the potential of assistive technology and remote supports.
