Join NJCDD’s Campaign to #SaveMedicaidNJ!
Legislators in both the US Senate and US House of Representatives are working on legislation that includes severe cuts to Medicaid, the largest insurance provider in the country and the single most important funding source for the support services that Americans with developmental disabilities and their families rely upon to lead healthy, dignified, and meaningful lives in our communities. These cuts could potentially reach $834 billion or more over 10 years. In addition, the President’s Budget Proposal includes an added $610 billion in cuts. That’s over $1.4 trillion in Medicaid Cuts over 10 years, which would be catastrophic to our support system.
As a community, we need to be sure that our federal legislators hear us, see us, and understand just how important the continued full funding of Medicaid is to us, our families, and our friends. We need to call on members of the general public, those with disabilities and without them, to join us in this effort. And we need YOUR HELP to do it!
Below, the NJCDD has provided printed materials, sample letters, contact information for legislators, and more to assist you in making your voice heard.

For People with Disabilities
Hi, my name is (your name) and I am your constituent.
I live in (your town) and I have a disability.
I need to talk to you about the changes to Medicaid that both houses of Congress are working on. I know a bill passed in the House of Representatives in May and is right now being discussed in the Senate.
I need (Legislator’s Name) to know that Medicaid is very important to me. My Medicaid provides me with (list what you get from Medicaid – As examples, you might say: physical therapy, caregiver to help dress/bathe/eat, supported employment, medical equipment…).
I don’t know what I would do if my Medicaid was cut or reduced in any way. I might have to move into an institutional setting to receive the care I need since any cuts to Medicaid would make it very hard to get care in the community. I want to live, work, and receive care in my community.
I am a very concerned that Per Capita Caps, which will cut over $800 billion from Medicaid, will mean that I won’t have my Medicaid or get less support through my Medicaid in the future.
Please tell (Legislator’s Name) to protect my Medicaid. Medicaid is my lifeline for living in the community.
Thank you,
(Your Name)
For Family Members/Friends
Hi, my name is (your name) and I am your constituent.
I live in (your city). I want to tell you about (name of your family member/friend) who has a disability. They rely on Medicaid to make sure they can live in the community and not in an institution.
I need to talk to you about the changes to Medicaid that both houses of Congress are working on. I know a bill passed in the House of Representatives in May and is right now being discussed in the Senate.
I need (Legislator’s Name) and his/her Health Staff Person to know that Medicaid is very important to me. (Name of Family Member/Friend)’s Medicaid provides them with (list what your family/friend gets from Medicaid – As examples, you might say: physical therapy, caregiver to help dress/bathe/eat, supported employment, medical equipment, respite services…).
I don’t know what we would do if their Medicaid was cut or reduced in any way. I am very concerned they might be forced into an institutional setting to receive the care they need since any cuts to Medicaid would make it very hard to get care in the community.
I am a very concerned that Per Capita Caps, which will cut over $800 billion from Medicaid, will mean that they won’t be able to live in the community because their Medicaid will be cut or reduced.
Please tell (Legislator’s Name) to protect Medicaid. Medicaid is the lifeline of New Jerseyans with disabilities living in the community.
Thank you,
(Your name)
